Project Overview

Beginning in February of 2017, the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) will begin the reconstruction of West Grand Avenue Improvement between Pulaski and Chicago which is the fifth (5th) of eight (8) projects of an overall improvement program along Grand Avenue between Fullerton and Desplaines.

Improvements include partial reconstruction and pavement widening with a composite pavement which will replace the parking and outer travel lanes and update drainage. A shared bike lane will be now available on the project as we are widening the pavement by 2’ on either side from a total width of 42’ to 46’. Sustainable improvements include installation of permeable concrete sidewalks on approximately 20% of the total project, and new LED arterial davit street lighting, and the planting of 149 trees in pits and parkways which adds 70 trees to the project area. CDOT will modernize the eight (8) traffic signals within the project limits. The proposed improvements including replacement of most sidewalks and ADA ramps, installation of new curb/ gutter, driveways, trees and trees in pits/parkways should help invigorate this mixed use area which has industrial, commercial and residential uses throughout the corridor.

The project is scheduled for substantial completion in late 2017

Traffic Impacts

Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction within the work zone for the majority of the project starting February 13th to mid November 2017.

Work will progress in several stages from east to west, additional utility work may occur at the same time in areas which CDOT’s contractor is not working. Work will proceed on one side with in the stage and then flip to the other side for completion.

Stages and anticipated schedule:
Central Park to Homan, spring to early summer 2017
Homan viaduct (concurrent with stages before and after) end of June through mid-August 2017
Hamlin to Homan, summer to early fall 2017,
Pulaski to Hamlin, Fall 2017.

There is a full detour planned to complete work underneath the viaduct at Homan. This work will likely take place June through August. Detour will be from Division to Kedzie to Chicago Ave back to Grand.
