Mayor Rahm Emanuel today attended two celebrations honoring veterans in Chicago. He spoke at the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) Veterans Day Ceremony at Soldier Field and afterwards toured Veterans’ New Beginnings, a new housing development for veterans located in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood.

“I am honored to pay tribute to our veterans at these two events in the city,” said Mayor Emanuel. “We should daily honor and celebrate the men and women who commit themselves to serving our country and sacrifice their time and put themselves in harm’s way for our freedom.”

Mayor Emanuel and Alderman James Balcer of the 11th Ward each spoke at DCASE’s Veterans Day Ceremony. This annual event held at Soldier Event was created to set aside time to thank and honor living veterans who served honorably in the military in wartime and peacetime.

Afterward Mayor Emanuel and Alderman Brookins toured a new investment for local veterans in the city’s 21st ward. The $13.5 million development will include space for on-site social services, a computer room, classroom and a library for residents earning up to 60 percent of area median income.
