Statement from Mayor Emanuel on the Passing of Elie Wiesel

Mayor's Press Office    312.744.3334

Elie Wiesel's words and his works brought light to the dark acts endured by so many during the Holocaust. In 2009, I was proud to watch this great man return to the site of Buchenwald standing tall next to the President of the United States and the German Chancellor. While he may be gone from this world, his voice will live on as a constant reminder of the dangers of bigotry and hatred. Amy and I extend our deepest sympathies to Elie's family, a man from whom I learned so much and who I was honored to call a friend.
