Statement from Mayor Emanuel and Superintendent Johnson on State Anti-Auto Theft Legislation

Mayor's Press Office    312.744.3334

Today Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson issued the below statement after the Illinois State Senate voted 56-0 to pass Senate Bill 2339, a bill aimed at reducing violent auto thefts in Chicago and across the state.

"For far too long, violent auto theft offenders were being let off the hook because of loopholes in state laws. The Illinois Senate voted to change that today. We are one step closer to giving police and prosecutors the tools they need to ensure victims receive justice in court. I want to thank Senators Munoz, Bennett and Cunningham for working on this important issue, and I hope the House will pass this common-sense measure swiftly."
