Overview

CDOT is building a Neighborhood Bike Network in South Lawndale, including the Little Village and Marshall Square neighborhoods. The result will be a series of connected bike routes which allow neighbors to easily get to all the places they want and need to go by bike. A well-designed network provides comfortable routes within a neighborhood while linking surrounding neighborhoods to one another. This approach will improve accessibility, safety, public health, and overall quality of life for communities across Chicago.

In 2023, CDOT is focused on installing a Quick-Build Network of projects which can be installed immediately. Then in the following years we will continue the conversation and install longer-term projects.

Project Approach

The Neighborhood Bike Network was developed through collaboration with South Lawndale community members, including a Taskforce of community leaders to help guide this process. The Taskforce collaborated to:

  • Facilitate discussion on the role that transportation plays in South Lawndale
  • Identify the important destinations, connections, and barriers to moving around the neighborhood
  • Identify opportunities to implement a Quick-Build Network of bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure
  • Spread the word about this initiative and discuss the benefits of biking with neighbors
