Augusta Boulevard Complete Streets Upgrades

Overview

CDOT installed safety improvements, including a new protected bike lane, on Augusta Boulevard from Western Avenue to Milwaukee Avenue in 2023. Vehicle travel lanes, parking, and bike lanes were reconfigured to promote safer driving speeds and better space for biking along the residential corridor. Intersections were also upgraded to improve pedestrian crossings.

Project Goals

  • Create safer pedestrian crossings with curb extensions at many intersections and refreshed pavement markings. These upgrades reduced crossing distances and improved visibility for people walking. Sixteen pedestrian crashes occurred on this corridor between 2016-2020, all resulting in injuries. One person was killed.
  • Reduce the severity of motor vehicle crashes by designing for safe speeds, narrowing vehicle lanes and reducing the speed limit to 20 MPH. CDOT has observed drivers traveling at more than 50 MPH on this residential corridor, at least one driver has been killed in the project area since 2016.
  • Increase safety and convenience for people biking by upgrading the existing bike lane to a protected facility between the curb and the parking lane, enhanced with pre-cast concrete barriers. This enables more families and youth to bike to the schools along the corridor.
  • Increase school pick-up and drop-off spaces at Christopher Columbus School, improving travel at peak times, preventing double parking and conflicts with people on bike.
Infrastructure Highlights

  1. Protected bike lanes with pre-cast concrete barriers separating the bike lane and parking lane
  2. 20 MPH design speed with narrower vehicle lanes and posted signage
  3. Curb extensions to reduce crossing distances for people walking across Augusta
  4. Enhanced pavement markings to emphasize the presence of people at crossings and intersections, including green painted bike facilities
Project Results

Immediately after installation, the project resulted in:

  • 29% increase in people driving slower than 20 MPH
  • 35% decrease in people driving faster than 30 MPH
