As a member in the VISTA program, you serve full time for one-year. VISTA members build capacity in nonprofit organizations and public agencies to help them more effectively generate the commitment of private sector resources, encourage volunteer service at the local level, and empower individuals and communities. AmeriCorps recently awarded the City of Chicago VISTA positions to support the New Arrivals mission. 

The VISTA members housed at the Chicago Mayor's Office will:

• Collaborate with volunteer based organizations to promote volunteerism and civic engagement.
• Manage volunteer engagement and capacity building, diversifying service opportunities.
• Coordinate with civic partners for New Arrivals, building necessary infrastructure.
• Develop a recruitment, retention, and recognition strategy with the City of Chicago and partners. - Form a Core Group of Volunteer Management Organizations, focusing on partnerships.
• Establish a vetting and screening protocol for volunteers, ensuring safety.
• Develop and implement a volunteer training program for effective assistance to asylum seekers.
• Establish a robust volunteer coordination system, optimizing resources.
• Create a sustainability plan for long-term volunteer engagement and support.

Separately, VISTA members supporting DFSS New Arrivals Sheltering Team will: 

• Conduct a needs assessment and gap analysis for asylum seekers' services.
• Identify and leverage existing nonprofit partnerships for resource maximization.
• Expand the network of service providers for comprehensive support.
• Form a working group to coordinate and enhance wraparound services across shelters.
